Beyond Words

The Edinburgh experience also included a visit to The Naked Portrait at the National Portrait Gallery.  2nd September is the last day.  See it if you can.  The paintings and photographs are ‘naked’ both in the sense of portraying the nude human form and in the exposure of humanity in its imperfection, disease and frailty as well as its beauty.   I found myself quite overwhelmed by the candour of some of the self portraits.   Does it feel like courage on the part of the artist?  I don’t know.  But it looks like it to me.

It wasn’t all mortality and gloom though – some of it was hilarious.  It highlighted too the absurdity of our attempts to appear more dignified, more together, than we actually are, ‘poor bare forked animals’.

The publicity includes the warning: Please note this show contains nudity.   Er, yes.
